North Kent Connect Rebrands Star Tree Program

Tree of hope infoAs you may know, North Kent Connect opened a thrift store in August to help both clients and the public provide high-quality, gently-used, affordable items for their families. Clients can pay for their items by participating in our V.I.P. Plan – they can Volunteer in the community for store credit, Invest in themselves by taking a class for store credit, or Purchase their items outright. For more information on the V.I.P. Plan please visit the Education tab. Response for The Store has been overwhelmingly positive; many clients have expressed that they appreciate being able to provide for their family by giving back.

With this in mind, we have decided to rebrand the Star Tree Program as the Tree of Hope. We are asking churches and businesses to donate new, unwrapped items for our clients to purchase at low prices for their families at our Christmas Store. Clients will be able to choose the items that are most important to them instead of adhering to the previous strict guidelines. These changes will allow clients to provide for their family and maintain their dignity while doing so. Remaining items will be sold in our thrift store with proceeds benefiting families through our food and empowerment programs. Toys will still be available at no cost through the Toys for Tots program.

Gift tags can be reserved at any time by contacting Cassie LaMacchia at 616.866.3478 ext. 355 or cassie.lamacchia@nkconnect.org. We ask that items are returned to NKC by Monday, December 11.

In the book Toxic Charity, which has been the cornerstone of our new direction, author Robert Lupton says, “Giving to those in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy people.” Help us give the gift of dignity to our clients. Thank you.

The NEW Christmas Store

Christmas Registration NOW Through December 14

Red Christmas gifts and ornamentsUpdated clients have until Thursday, December 14 to sign up for this year's Christmas Store. All items in the Christmas Store will be 50% off regular price. For example, if a set of sheets is normally $8, they would be $4 during the Christmas Store.

Toys for Tots remains a free program, but clients are still required to sign up with a Case Manager.
